Good ISBN: 9789812304339. 311p, index. Book is in good condition, but has highlighting on several pages in light yellow. This volume focuses on some of the most important and topical questions about Myanmar. Many of these issues have not been sufficiently researched, comprehensively compiled, and comparatively examined within the broader Southeast Asian context. Especially important contributions in the book pertain to issues of historical influence and political considerations that have shaped the dominant thinking within the state and the military. There are equally important studies of sensitive topics like the political economy of the state and the level of human security in the country. The three major ethnic groups in the country - Karen, Kachin, and Shan - are also studied in detail. Some of the negotiations between the Karen and Kachin ethnic insurgent group representatives on the one hand, and the military junta on the other, are spelled out in detail. An important corollary finding is the importance of religion and religious personalities in brokering peace between the ethnic groups and the military government. Finally, the book deals with how the various ethnic groups are trying to cope with decades of conflict and reconstruct their communities. BOOK SHIPS FROM USA. $23.95

Seton-Watson's Britain in Europe, appeared in 1937. He has extended the subject beyond the frontiers of Europe to Africa, the Far East, and the Americas. Set against the background of England's economic and military power, the book's recurrent theme is the determination of successive governments to preserve maximum freedom of action throughout the world. An introductory chapter explains how this came to be the main preoccupation of Victorian statesmen, and an epilogue carries the story through the process of gradual commitment to the war alliance of 1914. A substantial collection of documents is included. They illustrate the course of Britain's foreign policy and convey something of its style and flavour. Many were previously not easily accessible in print. Dr. Bourne is Reader in International History at The University of London, teaching at the London School of Economics. Some dust jacket wear, also minor cover wear. BOOK SHIPS FROM USA OR CANADA. How violence and terrorism impact on societies has largely been ignored in mainstream security studies. However, in the post-cold war order, endemic violence has become part of life of people across the world, more so in South Asia. Within the current debates in security studies and efforts to make security conceptions more people-centered, the issue of violence finds some primacy. The concept of "human security" tries to focus on issues related to security of the citizens, and hence on the human costs of violent conflicts. This study tries to understand how violence and terrorism affect people's security in South Asia. It builds a new framework of security that does not view "human security" as opposed to state security. Rather, it views "human security" as an integrative concept that complements state security. The new framework of security focuses on the threats that organized violence poses to not only states and regimes but also to citizens and society. This book furthers the debate on the concept of "human security" and also unravels the complexities of the impact of terrorism on South Asian societies. $49.95
