Further, he believes, a leader is responsible not just for the health of a company's financial assets, but for its ethics. Advocating management through persuasion, and the exercise of democratic participation rather than concentrated power, he favors covenantal relationships with employees that rest on shared purpose, dignity and choice. [013838] Currie, Gregory. Image and Mind: Film, Philosophy, and Cognitive Science. Cambridge, England: Cambridge University Press, 1995. First Printing. Hard Cover. Very Good / Good. ISBN: 0521453569. 301p, index. Dust jacket has some minor wear/rubbing, pages are in very good condition. This is a book about the nature of film: about the nature of moving images, about the viewer's relation to film and about the kinds of narrative that film is capable of presenting. It represents a decisive break with the semiotic and psychoanalytic theories of film which have dominated discussion over the past twenty years. The central thesis is that film is essentially a pictorial medium and that the movement of film images is real rather than illusory. A general theory of pictorial representation is presented which insists on the realism of pictures and the impossibility of assimilating them into language. It criticizes attempts to explain the psychology of film viewing in terms of the viewer's imaginary occupation of a position within the world of film. On the contrary, film viewing is nearly always impersonal. Gregory Currie provides a general theory of narration and its interpretation in both pictorial and linguistic media, and concludes with an analysis of some ways in which film narrative and literary narrative differ. $29.95

[013932] Sugawara, Makoto. Lives of Master Swordsmen. Tokyo, Japan: Daiwa Securities/East Publications, Inc., 1996. Hard Cover. Good / Very Good. ISBN: 4915645010. 257p, index, B&W photos and illustrations, blue boards with silver lettering. Dust jacket has some minor wear/edgewear at corners and top of spine, three of four corners are slightly bumped. In Lives of Master Swordsmen you meet the Olympians of swordsmanship, including Tsukahara Bokuden and Miyamoto Musashi, lone wolves who wandered the length and breadth of Japan in search of worthy opponents; Kamiizumi Nobutsuna, whose namesake was none other than Takeda Shingen, the brilliant warlord during the Age of Civil Wars; the Yagyu-hereditary instructors of the Tokugawa-whose Zen- based Kage-ryu was the most illustrious of all schools in the annals of Japanese swordsmanship; Ito Kagehisa, the only master swordsman who devoted himself to swordsmanship as wielding a sword; and Kiyokawa Hachiro and Yamaoka Tesshu, who played active roles in the Meiji Restoration. The lives of these master swordsmen unfold against the backdrop of the Age of Civil Wars, the unification of the country by Toyotomi Hideyoshi, the Fortune Deciding Battle, the Battles of Winter and Summer, the Shimabara Revolt, the Pax Tokugawa, and the Meiji Restoration. With the exception of the chapter on Tsukahara Bokuden, which is based on oral Tradition, Lives of Master Swordsmen is founded on a careful analysis of historical facts. Makoto Sugawara takes especial pains to separate the Musashi of fact from the Musashi of fiction, and achieves startling psychological insights into the character of the great swordsman of ambivalent reputation. The book also includes the first translation of Fudochi Shinmyo Roku, the Priest Takuan's limpid Zen treatise on the martial arts. This influential treatise turned the attention of samurai toward Zen. $74.95

Some cover wear, library stamps and labels, tear on inside front cover where card pocket was removed (covered with tape). Regulation of the forest industry to protect salmon on the coast of British Columbia is a bargaining process. This process could serve the public interest very well if it were open, well-informed, and funded to do the job but this has not been the case. The overlapping jurisdictions of the federal and provincial govern- ments, and the arbitrary powers of the federal Fisheries Act are not fundamental problems. In fact, it is concluded that the public interest can best be served by these provisions. Strategic planning for salmon protection is the central proposal for dealing with the fundamental weaknesses; it can yield better infor- mation for decision-making, it can open up the decision-making process ^and make it accountable, and it can indicate the increased resources essential to an effective and efficient regulatory process. All of these are needed if the bargaining process is to better serve the public interest in making the very difficult decisions that lie ahead as both the forest industry and the salmon fisheries strive to deal with the problems of declining harvests. $13.95

First South Asian Edition, second printing 2007. 230p, index. Some minor cover wear/rubbing. This book was for sale in India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Nepal originally. From the front flap: Mergers and acquisitions trigger change on a huge scale, often causing chain reactions within a business sector as companies combine in the race to gain competitive advantage. Like atomic reactions, M&As release bursts of energy within companies, some of which are creative and some of which can be destructive. This book examines how companies can make a success out of what has been shown repeatedly to be a course of action that is difficult, disruptive and unpredictable. Its principal argument is that for an M&A to be successful attention must be given to getting the people involved "on side" as early as possible. Anyone who thinks they can bolt two businesses together and leave sorting out cultural conflicts and the like until the end of the process is making a big mistake. $16.95

Dust jacket has edge wear. From Calgary via Peru and Chile to Punta Arenas and Tierra del Fuego at the southernmost tip of South America, then back up the east side of South America and home by sea is a motoring experience worthy of a book - and this is the book. If you've occasionally wondered just how you'd fare driving south by east until you arrive where the Western Hemisphere dips its pointed toe into the icy waters above the Antarctic seas, this account gives you the answers, explicitly. It tells the story as exactly as the authors found the countries to be. Because the Rosses are travel film makers and lecturers by calling, they have a good sense of what intending travelers and even the stay-at-homes would like to know. It still takes a spirit of adventure, a dash of courage, plenty of documents and muchos patience to go where the roads are -- but the tourists aren't. $13.95
